A New Boat – Kashmir

I’m buying a sailboat.  It’s in Lewisporte NF

The seller and I made an agreement a few weeks ago subject to my inspection.  I flew out to St John’s on Saturday, rented a car and drove about 400 kms to see the boat, then did the return trip Sunday.

I’ll let the owner’s description and photos do the explaining.  The pilothouse really works for me.

I didn’t take any photos of my own.  It was cold.

  1. Jeff, Great looking sailboat! Nauticat 340 was great too.

Do you have any opinion about the 40 HP engine being strong enough for the high latitudes?

I ask because I’m looking to re-power my nauticat 44. It came with a Volvo 150 which was ridiculously overpowered. Also, the engine was an unreliable complicated piece of crap.

I’m looking to possibly repower with a Volvo D2-75hp. By my calculations, it would be enough to move my boat with 32,000 pounds displacement.

I’m thinking that if the 40 hp Westerbeke is enough to move your 16,000 pound finsailor, then 75 hp new engine would be enough to move my 32,000 pound N441.

I would appreciate your opinion since you’re considering Labrador. One of my dream destinations. Rick in New Haven CT

    1. Hi Rick, glad to hear that you’re underway again.

Short answer is yes, I think that engine is adequate for the purpose. The Finnsailers were more much more sail oriented than the other Nauticats of that vintage. N441 looks like a great boat, but probably more oriented to power.

In any seriously challenging weather I expect to be sailing, or motor sailing. I can’t really envision a situation that would require more power.

Great to have you following. Labrador is high on my list. Boat was as far as Nain a few years ago.

      1. Nain is rather far north! Almost to Torngat (dream destination).

It took me 5 years to recover. I bought my N441 in Grenada in March and nursed it home in May. Refit done except the engine committed suicide once it realized everything else on the boat was working.

I have enjoyed following you these many years. You’ve gone just about everywhere I had planned to go. New expedition Finnsailor would be a logical next step!

  2. Good morning This is an impressive vessel indeed. really well equipped. Seems very well thought out, and it of course looks to be in good order. So I suppose it means you will need to find a home for your cruiser? Im sure this will be a busy time for you juggling. Looks exciting. I like that you can have your tender out of the water and not towing it. Congrats, take care, Dave PS- enjoyed the holiday pics – one of the pictures of Susan quickly made me think of Mary, I could see a resemblance and recall some of the fun they had together.
